Volunteer Spotlight: Joe Miller

Platteville Community Arboretum

The Monday morning volunteer trail work crew is glad to have Joe Miller on their team.  According to Clay Shaffer, one of PCA’s coordinators, “Joe is always one of the first to arrive and last to leave each Monday. He’s like a Swiss Army knife: he does a lot of things and does them well.”

“I like to hike/walk. When I moved into the area four years ago I discovered the trail. After using it for a while, I decided to see if I could help in some way. About three years ago I joined the Monday morning crew. A great bunch of people. Volunteering here is a great way to give back,” explained Joe. “It’s a great way to socialize and meet new people.”

Joe is a retired electrician and builder. He likes doing woodworking and other building and maintenance projects. Joe helped us with a problem. The old map holders at our kiosks were allowing rainwater to seep in and soak the maps. Joe redesigned the map holders and built new ones. Now trail maps are safe and dry for folks to take.

Joe also worked on a picnic table project. Everyone needs to take a break once in a while when using the trail. During the growing season, stop by the trail behind Dunkin’ and check out the picnic table Joe created.

If you are ever out on the trail on a Monday morning and see a group of volunteers working to maintain and improve the trail, stop to say hello. They do most of the heavy work, like chain sawing, removing limbs, planting trees, sinking posts and signs, and removing invasives like honeysuckle. We call them the Brown Team because they do bigger projects like construction and tree removal.
